For the Gratin
  • 2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced Ensure to slice evenly for consistent cooking.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Used for greasing and dotting the top.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and ground nutmeg. Heat the mixture until warm but not boiling.
  3. Arrange half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes.
  5. Sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese over the first layer of potatoes.
  6. Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheese.
  7. Dot the top with butter and cover the dish with foil.
Baking
  1. Bake for 40 minutes covered, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, until the top is golden and bubbly.
  2. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve garnished with fresh herbs like parsley. Pairs well with a simple green salad and meats. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to a month.
