Method
Make the Caramel Sauce
- In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 6 tablespoons of butter, and 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of coarse salt and bring it to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Prepare the Crust
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the melted butter, 3/4 cup of granulated sugar, 1 3/4 cups of flour, 3 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Mix until the mixture is crumbly.
Assemble the Bars
- Press about 2/3 of the crumb mixture into the bottom of a greased baking dish.
- Carefully pour the cooled caramel sauce over the crust and sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.
Bake and Cool
- Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting them into squares.
Notes
Serve garnished with extra caramel sauce or sea salt. Pair with vanilla ice cream for a delightful dessert.
