Ingredients
  

For the Caramel Sauce
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
For the Crust
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup salted caramel sauce For drizzling and layering

Method
 

Make the Caramel Sauce
  1. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 6 tablespoons of butter, and 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. Add 1/2 teaspoon of coarse salt and bring it to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
Prepare the Crust
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the melted butter, 3/4 cup of granulated sugar, 1 3/4 cups of flour, 3 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Mix until the mixture is crumbly.
Assemble the Bars
  1. Press about 2/3 of the crumb mixture into the bottom of a greased baking dish.
  2. Carefully pour the cooled caramel sauce over the crust and sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.
Bake and Cool
  1. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  2. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting them into squares.

Notes

Serve garnished with extra caramel sauce or sea salt. Pair with vanilla ice cream for a delightful dessert.
